Working in tech in Vietnam? Why Australian employers are searching abroad for skills

Do you work in software, testing or another tech job in Vietnam? Australian employers are talking about a skills problem, and it may matter to you. Australia's job market may be cooling, but many businesses still cannot find the right people. The problem is not too few workers. It is a lack of the right skills in the right place at the right time.

What the research found

New research on global hiring gives some clear numbers. 88% of Australian businesses say it has become harder to find qualified local talent in the past year. Globally, the number is 78%. Almost eight in ten Australian businesses (79%) say they missed a key business goal because the talent was not available.

Parliament is also hearing this concern. An inquiry into skilled migration was told that Australia finds it hard to attract and keep technology talent. The areas include artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and energy. A science and technology body also warned about pressure on the local STEM pipeline. STEM means science, technology, engineering and maths.

Which jobs are growing

Between July 2025 and July 2026, Australian demand for internationally hired senior software engineers rose 141%. Game developers rose 100%. Software engineers rose 86%. QA specialists rose 42%.

Hires also grew from some countries. The Philippines rose 108%, India 89% and the US 55%. Vietnam is not listed in these figures, so please do not read them as a promise for Vietnamese workers. They only show that employers are looking abroad.

Two ways to hire from abroad

These two ideas are different, so it helps to know both.

  • Hiring abroad: a company finds expert skills in another country. The worker may stay at home and work remotely.
  • Skilled migration: a worker moves to Australia to do a job there. Some jobs need a person on site, so employers may sponsor skilled workers who can relocate.

Moving existing Australian jobs overseas only to save money is another matter again. Experts say Australia still needs to train its own people too. Training gives long-term strength. Hiring from abroad and skilled migration fill gaps today.

How you can get ready

You do not need to decide today. You can start with small steps.

  • Choose your main skill and learn to explain your projects in simple English.
  • Keep your degree and work documents together. Vietnamese degrees are usually assessed again abroad, and certified English translations may be needed.
  • If a police certificate is requested, a Vietnamese citizen usually needs the Judicial Record Certificate No. 2 (Phiếu lý lịch tư pháp số 2).
  • Plan for an English test such as IELTS or PTE if a visa or employer asks for one.

Please stay safe

Deal only with licensed organisations and real employers. Never pay an unlicensed broker. Be careful with anyone who asks for money upfront to secure a job or a visa. A real offer does not need you to rush.

Visa rules change, so check official pages before you decide. You can start on the Department of Home Affairs website.
