Working for an Australian team from Vietnam: is it a real option?
Tips · 2026-09-10 · 3 min read

Many people dream of a job in Australia. Some imagine moving there. But there is another way to work with Australian businesses. More of them are building teams in other countries. And Vietnam is on the list.
Why Australian firms look abroad
Hiring is hard in Australia right now. Roughly one in three employers said it had already cost them customers. A similar share said their service was getting worse. Nearly a third missed project deadlines.
Before they hired offshore, many firms left important roles empty for 30 to 60 days. That is a long time for a busy business.
It is not only about saving money
The top two reasons are skill shortages and rising wages. Each is named by roughly four in ten employers. Saving money used to be number one. Now it ranks lower.
Nearly two-thirds of the businesses surveyed already have offshore teams. Of the others, two-thirds plan to grow this over the next two years.
Which jobs are offshore?
Customer support is still the biggest. But many other jobs now go offshore too:
- IT and engineering
- Data and analytics
- Finance
- Cybersecurity
- Legal and HR
Employers say these roles are more important and need more knowledge than three years ago.
Where is Vietnam in this picture?
The Philippines is still the top single country. India and Eastern Europe come next. Vietnam and Malaysia are growing alternatives. Each offers a different balance of skills, cost and rules. Firms want more than one country in their plans.
What about AI?
Some people fear that AI will remove these jobs. The research says the opposite is happening so far. Two-thirds of employers use AI. Data analyst, AI engineer and automation specialist are the fastest-growing offshore roles.
However, nearly a third of employers give offshore teams no formal AI training. If you learn AI tools yourself, you stand out.
Will people stay?
Most offshore staff said they feel proud of their employer. They plan to stay for the next year. Flexibility and pay matter most if they think about leaving.
Two paths, different rules
Working for an Australian team from Vietnam is different from moving to Australia on a visa. The rules for each are not the same. Check every offer carefully.
Be careful, too. Deal only with licensed organisations and real employers. Never pay an unlicensed broker. Be wary of anyone who asks for money upfront to secure a job or a visa.
How to prepare
- Write a clear English CV with your tools and projects.
- Keep certified English translations of your Vietnamese documents.
- Practise for IELTS or PTE if an employer or visa needs an English test.
If you later want to explore visas, see the official Australian visa list. Every journey starts with one small step.
