Vietnamese workers: will AI change which Australian jobs you can aim for?
News · 2026-09-02 · 3 min read

Many Vietnamese workers dream of a job in Australia. Before you pick a job to aim for, it helps to know how AI is changing work. The news is not bad. It is a good reason to plan.
What is happening in the United States?
Large American companies are cutting office jobs. S&P 500 companies together cut around 400,000 white-collar roles in 2025. This was the first yearly fall in ten years. Some of them kept cutting in 2026. AI tools now do tasks that junior analysts, support staff and admin teams used to do.
Customer support shows this clearly. In the past three years, roughly 16.4% of customer support and call centre jobs in the US have gone. That is about 123,700 positions.
Is Australia the same?
Australia is a little behind the US, but early signs are there. Demand is cooling for admin, finance, basic analysis and customer support jobs. Around 210,000 people work in this kind of job in Australia. A slow change could be felt there too.
Please do not worry too much. The change is slow and uneven. It is not a sudden crash. Some big claims that AI will replace millions of jobs are over-hyped.
Which jobs look stronger?
Jobs that need good judgment, knowledge of rules, a person on site, or strong relationships are harder for AI to copy. Healthcare, engineering, trades and specialised technical work are good examples. Australia is earlier on the curve than the US. This gives you time to choose well.
Visas that need an employer's support, and visas that use a points test, may give more value to rare skills. A skill that is hard to automate can help you stand out.
What can you do now?
- Look at your own job. If it is routine office work, think about a second plan or a new skill.
- Vietnamese vocational certificates and degrees are usually assessed again in Australia, through a skills assessment. Learn what applies to your field early.
- If a police certificate is asked for, Vietnamese citizens usually need the Judicial Record Certificate No. 2 (Phiếu lý lịch tư pháp số 2).
- Keep certified English translations of your Vietnamese documents when the visa rules ask for them.
- Take IELTS or PTE only if the visa or the employer needs it.
The official skilled occupation list shows which jobs Australia looks for. It is a good place to start.
Stay safe while you plan
Deal only with licensed organisations and real employers. Never pay an unlicensed broker. Be careful with anyone who asks for money upfront to secure a job or a visa. If an offer sounds too easy, stop and check it first.
AI will change some jobs, but it will not stop good planning. Choose a path that will last, prepare your papers early, and take one clear step at a time.
