Vietnamese workers: Australia's report assumes 235,000 net migrants a year

Australia has published a long-term report about its economy for the next 40 years. One idea appears again and again: the country counts on migrant workers. If you are Vietnamese and thinking about a job in Australia, here is what the report says in simple words.

A number to remember: 235,000

The report assumes net overseas migration of 235,000 people each year. "Net" means people who arrive, minus people who leave. This number is used every year for the next four decades. Without it, the forecast would not work.

The reason is simple. Fewer babies are being born. The report now expects 1.34 children per woman by 2065-66. Before, it expected 1.62 in 2023. By the 2060s, more people will die each year than are born.

New arrivals are younger

The median age of a new migrant is 26. For people already living in Australia, it is 38. Younger workers help to slow down the ageing of the workforce. Without migration, the number of people aged 15-64 would not grow as expected.

Which jobs may grow?

The report talks about a care economy. This means health, disability support (NDIS) and aged care. The number of people over 65 is expected to nearly double. The number over 85 is expected to nearly triple. These areas have often used migrant workers.

The report also gives some hopeful numbers for the whole economy:

  • The economy doubles by 2065-66.
  • Real incomes are 55% higher.
  • Unemployment settles near 4.25%.
  • The population reaches 39.3 million.

These numbers depend on migration staying near 235,000 a year.

A risk to watch

The Coalition and One Nation have said they want much lower migration than this. So there is a gap between the report and the opposition parties. This is why plans can change. A forecast is not a promise of a visa or a job.

What can you do now?

  1. Choose your field and read about it on official pages. Start with the official skill occupation list.
  2. Find out how your Vietnamese degree or vocational certificate will be assessed again abroad.
  3. If you need a police certificate, Vietnamese citizens usually ask for the Judicial Record Certificate No. 2 (Phiếu lý lịch tư pháp số 2).
  4. Prepare for IELTS or PTE if your visa or employer needs it.
  5. Make certified English translations of your documents when the rules ask for them.

Be careful and stay safe

Only deal with licensed organisations and real employers. Never pay an unlicensed broker. Be careful with anyone who asks for money upfront to secure a job or a visa.

You do not need to rush. Learn, prepare, and wait for real, advertised jobs.
