Vietnamese students: how early should you apply for a New Zealand student visa?

Do you want to study in New Zealand this year? Then your biggest risk may be time, not paperwork. Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has more cases to process than last year. Because of this, the word "early" now means something different.

What is happening?

There are about 20% more Student visa applications in 2026 than in the same period of 2025. That is one reason the queue is longer. There is a second reason. More applicants this year come from places where INZ must check documents more deeply. More cases, and harder cases, make the wait grow.

Please do not worry too much. Just plan more time for your visa.

How early is early?

INZ says you should apply at least three months before you travel. In a normal year, this is enough. This year, it is nearer to the minimum than the best choice. Think about your documents too. Do you need to show money, school records or a sponsor? If yes, add more time to the three months.

What if your results are not ready?

Good news: you do not need your final results to start. Maybe your school grades or other study papers are still coming. In that case, your school can give you a conditional Offer of Place. This means the offer depends on something, such as your final results. INZ can start to check your file with this offer.

But remember one thing. INZ cannot grant the visa until the offer becomes unconditional. A conditional offer helps you start early. It does not remove the rule.

How to know the wait time

Do not guess. INZ puts Student visa processing times on its website. The numbers are updated every week and use the last four weeks of decisions. Check them often. Do not trust last year's story or what a friend says. INZ does not promise a fixed time. The time depends on how hard your case is, which checks are needed and how complete your first application was. Two people can apply on the same day and wait for very different times.

Use the official Immigration New Zealand website for the latest figures.

Did you apply for the July start?

Maybe you applied in May or June for July classes, and you have no answer. Talk to your school now. Ask about a new start date. Ask about deferral, which means moving your start to a later time. Ask how likely it is that you will start on time. Do not wait until the week before classes.

Get your Vietnam documents ready

  • Ask for certified English translations of your Vietnamese certificates and records when the rules ask for them.
  • Take an English test, such as IELTS or PTE, if your school or visa needs one.
  • If a police certificate is requested, the usual one for Vietnamese citizens is the Judicial Record Certificate No. 2 (Phiếu lý lịch tư pháp số 2).

Be careful about who you deal with. Use only licensed organisations and real education providers. Never pay an unlicensed broker, and be careful with anyone who asks for money upfront to "secure" a visa.

Five simple rules

  1. Apply early. Three months is the least.
  2. Send a complete application. Missing papers can add weeks.
  3. Answer INZ quickly if it asks you for something.
  4. Check the wait times from time to time.
  5. Tell your school early if your start date is in doubt.

This year, the visa is the last step before your flight. It also decides if you arrive on time.
