New Zealand's job ads are growing again: a closer look for Vietnamese workers

Good news is rare in a slow job market, so it is worth noticing when it comes. Online job advertisements in New Zealand have now grown for three straight quarters. Before that, they fell for almost three years in a row. The growth is spread across every region and every industry. If you are a Vietnamese worker who dreams of work in New Zealand from Vietnam, this is a small but real sign of hope.

What is happening?

New Zealand's job market is climbing out of a hard period. It is not a boom. It is a slow recovery.

More New Zealanders are also coming home from Australia. The number of returnees is up 14% on last year. People who left have not stopped leaving. Instead, more of them are coming back. That means you may meet them in the same job search, so a clear application matters.

Why are people coming back?

Money is a big reason. Australia has raised its interest rates three times this year, and its cash rate is now 4.35%. New Zealand's cash rate is 2.25%. Forecasts also say New Zealand's economy may grow faster than Australia's through 2026.

Wages are different. Tradespeople in Australia still earn more per hour. But the cost of living there can take back a lot of that extra pay.

This may not last

Please remember that the picture can change. Several bank economists think New Zealand's central bank will start raising rates again later this year. The cash rate could rise toward 3.25% by early 2027. If that happens, the gap with Australia will become smaller.

House prices are quiet at the moment. The national median is $775,000, and prices are slightly lower than a year ago. If you plan to rent or buy, keep watching the market.

How can you get ready?

  1. Check your trade. Vietnamese certificates and degrees are usually checked again abroad. In New Zealand this can mean qualification recognition. Some trades also need occupational registration. Read the rules for your own job.
  2. Learn the visa words. An accredited employer is a business that has been approved by Immigration New Zealand to hire workers from overseas. The official work page explains the options in plain steps.
  3. Prepare your papers. If a police certificate is requested, Vietnamese citizens usually need the Judicial Record Certificate No. 2 (Phiếu lý lịch tư pháp số 2). Keep certified English translations of your documents, and check whether an IELTS or PTE result is needed.

Stay safe

When news about jobs gets better, some people try to take advantage. Deal only with licensed organisations and real employers. Never pay an unlicensed broker. Be careful with anyone who asks for money upfront to secure a job or a visa. If an offer sounds too easy, stop and check it on an official government page.

A hopeful but careful message

New Zealand is giving signals that hiring is coming back. That is encouraging for you. Be patient, prepare early, and make decisions from facts. A calm plan is better than a rushed one.
