Is New Zealand's July gain really about students? A simple guide for Vietnamese workers
News · 2026-09-15 · 3 min read

Many Vietnamese workers ask the same question: is it a good time to look at New Zealand? The newest migration numbers give part of the answer. Let us go through them step by step.
What happened in July 2026?
More people came to New Zealand than left. The net gain was 5,200. A year earlier, in July 2025, it was 2,300. Arrivals rose 19 percent to 13,900. Departures fell 7 percent to 8,700.
Why do students change the story?
Nearly 2 in 5 of the July arrivals held student visas. They came at the start of the second semester of the academic year. This happens every year, so it is a seasonal lift. It does not mean that jobs suddenly became easier to get. Without the student bump, the recovery looks smaller.
Is the whole year strong?
Not yet. For the year to July 2026, the net gain was 20,300. The year before it was 9,600. That is better, but a usual July year has been closer to 31,000. So New Zealand is still below its normal level.
There are two flows inside that 20,300:
- People who are not New Zealand citizens: a net gain of 58,700.
- New Zealand citizens: a net loss of 38,300.
Why do New Zealanders leave?
Many go to Australia. In the year to December 2025, 19,100 people came from Australia and 47,500 went there. The net loss was 28,400. Between 2004 and 2013, the loss was around 30,000 a year. From 2014 to 2019 it fell to roughly 3,000 a year. Now it is high again.
What does this mean for you?
These numbers do not list jobs. They only show how people move. Still, they teach two lessons. First, study is a big part of the story right now. Second, the overall picture is still soft, so good preparation matters.
Here are simple steps you can take today:
- Ask how your trade certificate or degree will be recognised. For some trades in New Zealand, such as electrical and plumbing work, occupational registration is needed.
- If the visa or employer asks for an English test, plan for IELTS or PTE.
- Get certified English translations of your Vietnamese documents when the visa rules ask for them.
- If a police certificate is requested, a Vietnamese citizen usually needs the Judicial Record Certificate No. 2 (Phiếu lý lịch tư pháp số 2).
Read the official rules on the Immigration New Zealand visa page.
Stay safe
Deal only with licensed organisations and real employers. Never pay an unlicensed broker. Be careful with anyone who asks for money upfront to secure a job or a visa. A real employer will not ask you to pay for the offer itself.
Keep learning, keep your documents ready and take one step at a time. Good preparation will help you whenever the right job appears.
