Your work includes engine checks, mechanical repairs, marine electrical systems, commissioning and regular maintenance. You will work in the workshop, at customer sites and sometimes on the water. Key Responsibilities

  • Find faults in the mechanical, electrical, fuel and cooling systems of marine engines
  • Service and look after petrol outboard engines and other marine power systems
  • Repair engines, replace parts and do mechanical overhauls
  • Take engines apart, inspect them and put them back together
  • Find mechanical defects and decide how to repair them
  • Do planned servicing and preventative maintenance
  • Tune engines and test how well they perform
  • Use computer diagnostic equipment and software made by the engine maker
  • Find and repair problems with starting, charging and electrical systems on boats
  • Service and repair sterndrive and inboard systems when needed
  • Install and set up outboard engines, controls, gauges and wiring
  • Install marine electronics, accessories and related equipment
  • Do pre-delivery checks and commissioning
  • Run sea trials and check that the engine and systems work well
  • Go to customers for mobile servicing and repairs when required
  • Keep correct job sheets, service records and technical papers
  • Use the maker's specifications and recommended repair steps
  • Keep the workshop safe, tidy and professional, and always do high-quality work

Requirements & Eligibility

  • Relevant NZQF Level 4 marine, mechanical or related trade qualification, or an equivalent overseas qualification
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience working with internal-combustion engines
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience with outboard or marine engines
  • Proven ability to find engine faults and complete good repairs
  • Strong practical knowledge of engine servicing and changing mechanical parts
  • Experience with marine electrical and charging systems
  • Able to use computerised diagnostic equipment
  • Able to read manufacturer service manuals and technical specifications
  • Mercury outboard experience is highly regarded
  • MerCruiser experience is highly regarded
  • Knowledge of SmartCraft and DTS systems is advantageous
  • Marine manufacturer training or certification is an advantage
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving ability
  • Able to work alone and take ownership of the jobs you are given
  • Able to work well in an experienced technical team
  • Strong commitment to workplace safety and good workmanship, and a full driver’s licence is preferred
  • Must meet relevant New Zealand employment and immigration requirements
