Fitter Welder

A busy engineering workshop in Christchurch, New Zealand is looking for a Fitter Welder. You will do welding, fitting and assembly on many kinds of jobs. Some days you will follow detailed drawings. Other days you will use your own judgement.

The work includes truck decks, cranes, trailers and repairs. Suitable overseas applicants may be considered for employer-sponsored employment. Applicants must also meet New Zealand employment and visa rules that apply.

Write down the metals you have welded and how many years you have worked in a workshop. Then create a fitter welder CV for New Zealand on Build AI CV. Add welding tickets if you have them.

Key Responsibilities

  • Make and install custom truck decks and transport structures
  • Finish crane fit-outs and the fabrication work around them
  • Do MIG and TIG welding on mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium
  • Fabricate parts, fit them and put them together
  • Read engineering drawings and technical specifications
  • Measure, mark, cut and prepare materials with care
  • Finish welding and fabrication to the quality required
  • Study each job and choose a practical way to fix or build it
  • Repair transport equipment and truck bodies, and do general engineering repairs
  • Handle urgent workshop projects quickly and well
  • Check finished parts for size, strength and finish
  • Work to the engineering and certification rules that apply
  • Work with engineers when parts need inspection, certification or sign-off, and keep the workshop safe and professional

Requirements & Eligibility

  • Minimum 5 years of relevant professional experience in fitting, welding or fabrication
  • Proven practical experience in fabrication and workshop work
  • Strong MIG and TIG welding skills
  • Experience with mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium/alloy
  • Confident when fitting and assembling fabricated structures
  • Can understand technical drawings and work from them
  • Can assess practical fabrication problems and solve them on your own
  • Careful with measurements, tolerances and the final quality
  • Reliable and careful about safety, accuracy and workmanship
  • Experience with trucks, transport or heavy fabrication is an advantage
  • Welding tickets or relevant industry certifications are advantageous but not mandatory
  • Ready to get more welding certifications where needed
  • Can give verifiable evidence of your trade experience and employment history, and must meet New Zealand employment and visa requirements
