A dining and events kitchen in Canberra needs a qualified, experienced Chef. The kitchen serves à la carte meals and large functions, so you will cook many kinds of food.

You will work with fresh produce, learn from experienced chefs and share ideas about menus and food costs. The team cares about quality and teamwork. Visa sponsorship available for suitable overseas candidates without Australian work rights.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and cook quality dishes for à la carte and function services
  • Work with the Head Chef to deliver menus and daily kitchen needs
  • Help with menu planning, development and costing
  • Choose, check and prepare fresh ingredients to the required quality
  • Keep food storage, stock rotation and ingredient handling correct
  • Help order stock and control inventory
  • Check preparation so food stays consistent and looks good
  • Reduce food waste with careful preparation, portion control and storage
  • Use the right cooking techniques for each dish
  • Keep kitchen hygiene and food safety strict
  • Work well in busy restaurant and function services, and help coordinate kitchen workflow
  • Support and guide junior kitchen staff, and give them tasks that match their ability
  • Suggest ways to make the kitchen more efficient
  • Work with the wider hospitality team for excellent guest experiences
  • Know local and regional produce and how to handle it

Requirements & Eligibility

  • Certificate IV in Commercial Cookery or an equivalent recognised qualification
  • At least 3 years of relevant professional kitchen experience
  • Strong commercial cooking and food preparation experience
  • Experience in quality dining places; fine dining experience is advantageous
  • Regional or rural hospitality experience is advantageous
  • Good knowledge of food safety, hygiene and kitchen procedures
  • Can work with fresh and seasonal produce
  • Strong attention to food quality, presentation and consistency
  • Can work efficiently in a fast-paced kitchen
  • Strong multitasking and time-management skills, and calm, effective decisions under pressure
  • Good communication and teamwork skills
  • Can help supervise junior staff and give them tasks
  • Professional attitude and commitment to high hospitality standards
  • Genuine interest in developing a long-term culinary career in Australia
  • Must satisfy relevant Australian employment and visa requirements
